ESU BOARD MEETS NEW DEAN

January 16, 2018--Members of the Emeritus Students Union board met with incoming Associate Dean Scott Silverman (3rd from L) to discuss ESU's contributions  to student life.   They filled him in on the organization's beginning in 2013 to campaign against the loss of state funding that could have shut down Emeritus College.  In the past five years ESU has opened a much-needed channel of communication to students so that they are informed of  issues affecting their program: maintenance of the building, the need for additional new classes, plans for future.  In its first "share and learn" program open free-of-charge to all, ESU arranged for a nutritionist-doctor to speak to students and answer their questions about diet, supplements and links to disease.  At ESU's suggestion, the Santa Monica College administration is currently considering a gerontology course  of study for SMC students which would link Emeritus  to its college-age colleagues. The meeting with Dr. Silverman was arranged by Dr. Dione (DeeDee) Carter, SMC Dean, Noncredit and External Programs (2nd from R).  Dr. Carter had served as interim dean while the search for a new Emeritus Associate Dean was being conducted and she will continue to oversee our program.
